Nov 26, Kathmandu: Haribohani Ekadashi is the day of Lord Bishnu. It is believed that Lord Bishnu wakes up from his slumber in Haribodhani Ekadashi and presides over all religious sites across the universe. Haribodhani Ekadashi falls on the month of November right after monsoon and the beginning of wedding season.

Hariobdhani Ekadashi is also known as Tulasi Vivah. It is the auspicious day on Hindu calender. The celebration commemorates the marriage of Lord Bishnu with Tulasi plant which is said to be the incarnation of goddess Laxmi. Married women celebrate Tulasi Vivah for marital bliss while unmarried women celebrate it to get good husband.

Why is Tulasi Vivah celebrated?

There was a demon king named Jalandhar who was famous for his evil character. The great success of his evil act was his wife Brinda’s virtuous character. Brinda was devotee of Lord Bishnu and constantly prayed for his well-being and longevity. To stop Jalandhar’s evil act and power Lord Bishnu took the form of Jalandhar and took Brinda’s celibacy.

Soon after Jalandhar lost fight and was killed. When Brinda knew about Lord Bishnu’s act she curshed him into stone (Shaligram) and immolated herself into Jalandhar’s pyre. Lord Vishnu turned Brinda’s soul into Tulasi plant and promised to marry her.

The Tulasi plant is believed to be a form of Goddess Laxmi and Brinda is one of her incarnation. In the next birth Lord Bishnu on Shaligram form married Tulasi. Thus, Tulasi Vivah includes ritual of marrying Shaligram with Tulasi plant.
